What is tempered glass?

Tempered glass, also known as toughened glass, is a type of safety glass created by treating regular glass with controlled heat or chemicals. This process makes it significantly stronger than regular glass. When broken, tempered glass shatters into small, harmless pieces instead of sharp shards like regular glass, which can cause serious injuries. Because of this safety feature, tempered glass is preferred in many applications where there’s a risk of breakage, including shower doors, glass tabletops, car windows, building exteriors, and even appliance glass like oven doors.

What is laminated glass?

Laminated glass is a type of safety glass that combines two or more layers of glass with a plastic interlayer, like a sandwich. This construction makes the glass resist shattering and hold its shape even when broken, preventing dangerous shards from forming. Laminated glass is used in car windshields, skylights, and high-rise windows for safety, and it can also offer soundproofing and UV protection depending on the interlayer material.

What is annealed glass?

Annealed glass, also sometimes called standard glass, is the most common type of glass. It’s been through a heating and slow cooling process during manufacturing to relieve internal stresses and make it more durable than regular plate glass. Unlike tempered glass, it won’t shatter into small pieces when broken but instead breaks into large, jagged shards. This makes it less suitable for safety applications but favorable for its affordability, ease of cutting and shaping, and good clarity. You’ll find annealed glass in many everyday items like picture frames, tabletops, and non-load-bearing windows.
